Reminiscent of Dave Brubeck’s “Take Five,” Five and Three is all about the groove. An opening melody, first heard in the trombones and soon passed to trumpets and saxophones, floats easily over the five-four groove as this work sets out. Moving to a three-feel in the bridge, the work moves onto a sort of shout section trading with various soloists playing four bars each. With a piano breakdown following, alto saxophone and trombone counter melodies leading back to the bridge, a false ending and a nice last chord. Try to keep this tune out of your head if you can but the groove will stay with you for sure.
