Composed for Double Bass 2000, this five-movement suite offers enjoyable and melodic music for the beginner bassist. In half and first positions throughout, each piece has its own character and style, using pizzicato and arco, with simple and effective piano accompaniments. 'A Seaside Suite has five short movements all with a clear character for the performer to bring out. It remains in first and half position with a few simple shifts. The piano part in all movements is integral and even when the harmony moves away from the most obvious chords, it supports the solo line encouraging good listening skills. Whilst these pieces are clearly incomplete without the piano part, the bass line is sufficiently strong to make practising it on its own musically rewarding. Some younger student s struggle to make a really good pizzicato sound when they begin learning and might need to bow the fourth movement. A Seaside Suite will be enjoyed by early learners of all ages and would make a lovely item in an end of term concert. I can highly recommend it.' (Double Bassist) GeoffreyHead has written a number of works for double bass, encouraged by his bass playing grandson, Jacob, and his background as a jazz pianist and composer imbue his music with a light and rhythmic spirit which appeals to players and audiences alike.
